Farrier Report: Glushu for Club Footed Foal.

“This is one of my Glushu clients. A club footed foal, pre desmotomy.

I see very adventurous shoeing from time to time, intended to undo the contraction of the DDFT in foals. Perhaps someone out there is helped with some random pointers?

To farriers: don't try this without a veterinarian. Forget about toe extensions, way too aggressive. Don't just apply glue to the dorsal wall. That would create too much break away forces to that little foot, use a cuff type of shoe. Don't forget about hoof pack.

Drop heels to the widest part of the foot, just the heels, do not even rasp the toe. Setting glue (both MMA and PU) create heat, protect the coronary band and bulbs of the foal's foot.

To veterinarians: don't try this without a farrier. Don't wait, cases like these will not magically get better if left alone. If derotation by the farrier does not bring adequate results consider a desmotomy of the inferior check ligament.

Remember: a desmotomy without a supporting shoeing package will never be more than just a cut. Monitor the palmar angle frequently, have toe height adjusted when needed.

Here I used a foal size GLUSHU (85 mm) with a counter wedge of 2.5 degrees glued to the foot with GLUE-U Shufit (Acrylic). This GLUSHU is a cuff type glue shoe, with an aluminum core. In cases like these very important because the aluminum prevents too much wear of the toe.
