Farrier Report: Glushu for rotation.

“Maybe this interests a vet-farrier team out there? A case where the local veterinarian, a clinic and farrier worked closely together to save a horse his life.

The rotation of the coffin bone following laminitis usually compresses blood vessels dorsally, the front of the hoof. However the coffin bone can (also) rotate sideways. That is what happened here, the rotation towards medial, the inside of the hoof, caused the medial sublamellar vessels to be squeezed shut, not allowing any blood flow anymore.

Where "traditional" rotation forces can be effectively dealt with, the "sideways" rotation leaves you hardly any options, there really is no way to counteract those rotational forces. Where grooving, milling a groove under the coronary band, is helpful sometimes and at least a conservative first step, it is often not enough. When it's not enough full resection of the medial wall is the only option left. That's what we did here.

After resection we found a lot of tissue turned necrotic (arrowed in blue) because of the lack of blood flow, requiring a lot of after care.

Anyone doubting the quality of glue ons like these GLUSHUS in high end cases like these, think again.

They saved this horse his life as did Anna Weber not only because of the exceptional after care management, but also by advising the owner to send the horse to Tierklinik Lüsche where they have the facilities to handle cases like these.

The pictures show the initial X ray and the forces at play (arrowed), the venogram before resection where the yellow arrow shows the complete lack of blood flow medially and a later venogram where blood vessels again are up to their task, be it a little disorganized as of yet.
