“This horse originally presented for laminitis and had surgery about 5 weeks ago. Those images were previously posted. I have reposted a few original images at the end of this series. The farrier involved with this case is Wayne Sodowsky
The horse is no longer lame at a walk, although no turn out has been allowed yet due to the healing laminae of the foot; the tenuous connections need time to heal before being asked to function normally.
The feet are much more normal in appearance now, and the palmar axis has returned to normal. Desmotomy of the inferior check ligament has allowed removal of several inches of heel.
The GluShu is working well for this horse, though no shoe will help absolutely every horse.
The GluShu has a metal shoe inside the vulcanized rubber and will last for many weeks. The cuff has been removed at the toe to allow the shoe to fit properly and provide caudal hoof support.
The initial shoes were still good, though they cannot be reused. With a more normal foot, they could have been left in place another month. Obviously, with this patient, the foot required trimming four weeks post shoeing so that the foot can continue to be fixed.
This type of shoe may not be required in the long term, but several more shoeing cycles with this shoe will certainly be helpful.
As far as underlying cause, the horse does have equine Cushing's disease, which is being treated, and, of course, nutrition has been addressed.
